Ski & Snowboarding Conditioning Classes in Bend, Oregon

If you live in Bend, Oregon, winter isn't something to endure - it's something to celebrate. For many of us, the first snowfall means it's time to wax the skis, tune the snowboard, and start watching the Mt. Bachelor forecast. Whether you're carving groomers, floating through powder, skiing with your kids, snowboarding with friends, or exploring the backcountry, skiing and riding are part of what makes living in Central Oregon so special.

But every fall I notice the same thing.

People spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on new skis, boots, bindings, and outerwear, yet they spend very little time preparing the one piece of equipment that matters most - their body. That's why we've been offering our Ski & Snowboard Conditioning Program at Fortitude Fitness Training in Bend for the past six years.

Why Take a Ski Conditioning Class?

Your first day on the mountain shouldn't be your first day preparing your body. Skiing and snowboarding are physically demanding sports that require far more than strong legs. Every run challenges your strength, endurance, balance, coordination, mobility, and ability to react quickly to changing terrain.

Whether you're skiing at Mt. Bachelor, taking trips to Whistler, Tahoe, Sun Valley, or the Dolomites, or simply hopin

g to keep up with your family this winter, being physically prepared allows you to enjoy every day on the mountain even more. Instead of spending December trying to find your "ski legs," imagine starting the season already feeling strong, stable, and confident.

Can Ski Conditioning Help Prevent Injuries?

No exercise program can eliminate injuries completely. However, one of the biggest contributors to skiing and snowboarding injuries is fatigue. As your muscles tire, your technique changes. Knees begin collapsing inward, your hips stop absorbing force efficiently, reaction time slows, and falls become much more likely.

The stronger and more conditioned you are before the season begins, the better your body can maintain good movement patterns after several hours on the mountain.

Our goal isn't simply to make you stronger. It's to build a body that's resilient enough to enjoy long ski days while reducing unnecessary stress on your knees, hips, back, and shoulders.

The Muscle Groups Every Skier and Snowboarder Should Train

Many people think skiing is all about the quadriceps. While strong quads are important, they're only one part of the equation. Our program focuses on developing the muscles that contribute most to skiing performance and injury prevention:

          Glutes

Your glutes generate power, stabilize your hips, and help protect your knees while turning and absorbing terrain.

          Hamstrings

Strong hamstrings balance the workload of the quadriceps and help stabilize the knee during quick changes in direction.

          Core

Your core transfers power between your upper and lower body while helping maintain posture, control, and balance throughout every run.

          Hips

Hip strength and mobility improve edge control, balance, and efficient movement while reducing unnecessary stress on the knees.

          Lower Legs

Your calves and ankles constantly adjust to changing snow conditions and help you stay balanced over your skis or snowboard.

          Upper Body

Strong shoulders, back, and grip improve pole plants, stability, carrying equipment, and recovering from unexpected movements.

          Why We Include Plyometrics

One of the biggest differences between skiing and traditional gym workouts is the speed at which your body must react. A hidden bump, icy section, tree well, or another skier crossing your path requires your muscles to absorb force and immediately create force again. That's exactly what plyometric training develops.

Our classes include appropriately scaled jumping, landing, and reactive drills that improve:

Why Ski Conditioning Makes Sense in Bend

Living in Bend means staying active all year. Mountain biking turns into skiing. Trail running becomes snowshoeing. Pickleball becomes powder days. Our community doesn't stop moving when winter arrives - it simply changes sports. The purpose of Ski Conditioning is to make that seasonal transition smoother.

Our members consistently tell us they notice:

           Less soreness after ski weekends

Better endurance from first chair to last chair

           More confidence skiing steeper terrain

           Better balance in challenging snow

           Faster recovery between ski days

Greater confidence skiing with family and friends

Why I Love Teaching Ski Conditioning

I've been skiing and snowboarding for well over four decades, and I still get excited every time that first storm rolls into the Cascades. There's something unforgettable about loading the chairlift on a bluebird morning, hearing fresh snow under your skis, finding powder stashes with friends, or watching someone experience their first great day on the mountain. Those experiences are why I continue to love winter.

, I've also had the privilege of coaching Ski Conditioning classes. The workouts are fun, but what really keeps me coming back are the conversations after ski season. Members tell me they felt stronger than ever. They skied longer without getting exhausted. They tackled runs they'd avoided for years. They kept up with their kids or grandkids. Most importantly, they simply enjoyed skiing more.

What Injury Taught Me about Adaptation, Movement and Resilience

This year marks 26 years since an injury changed the course of my life. What I initially believed would be a temporary setback became a decades-long journey through chronic pain, loss of identity, adaptation, resilience, and ultimately, a deeper sense of purpose.

Over the years, I’ve explored countless modalities. Some worked. Some didn’t. The ones that had the biggest positive impact for me were:

One of the most pivotal moments in my healing journey came in 2003, when I saw a chiropractor for the first time. After months of physical therapy and ongoing discomfort, a single adjustment made my foot feel noticeably better than it had in a long time. That experience completely shifted my perspective on healing and the way the body functions.

Up until then, I had focused almost entirely on the injured area itself. But that experience helped me realize the body functions as an interconnected system. When one part is compromised, everything else adapts and compensates around it.

Later, I met mentors who deepened that understanding, including Dr. Tim Schroeder. Over time, I realized something profound: healing isn’t always about doing more. It’s about precision, consistency, alignment, and movement quality. That understanding not only changed how I approached my own recovery, but also how I approached coaching and training others.

The Invisible Reality of Chronic Pain

These years of pain have been life-changing, humbling, frustrating, and deeply educational. What once felt like a life sentence gradually became a mission to better understand my body, restore balance where I could, and find peace within the limitations I was facing.

One of the biggest challenges was learning to live in a compensated body. My foot never fully returned to proper alignment, running now meant pain with every foot strike, and over time my body adapted around the injury. I learned to walk, stand, and move on an unstable foundation. Over years, and eventually decades, those compensations created deeper imbalances and constant underlying pain.

That journey included swelling, setbacks, discouragement, and moments where I questioned whether I would ever fully trust my body again. Simple things that seem mundane become challenging. It has been hard for me to run across the street when there is an oncoming car. Or standing at events or concerts and being able to make the long walk.

If you’ve never experienced chronic pain, it’s difficult to understand the amount of time, emotional energy, expertise, and financial investment required to manage it. Healing is rarely linear. There is a physical and emotional toll that is always running in the background gobbling up energy bandwidth. It’s like leaving a navigation app running in the background of your phone as it consumes battery at a rapid pace. At the same time, the experience gave me a much deeper appreciation for movement and everything my body still allows me to do.

When people think about their fitness options, they usually picture two paths: a group fitness class, or one-on-one personal training. But there's a third option that's grown in popularity because it blends the strengths of both — small group training, sometimes called semi-private training.

Here's what it is, how it works, and how to know if it's the right fit for your goals.

          What Is Small Group Training?

Small group training (also known as semi-private training) is a coaching model where a small number of clients, typically two to four, train together under the guidance of one coach. Unlike a large group class where everyone follows the same routine, each participant in a small group session follows programming that's built around their individual goals, fitness level, and any movement limitations.

At Fortitude Fitness Training, our small group sessions are capped at four participants per coach. That ratio is intentional. It's small enough for the coach to give each person real, individualized attention, while still creating the shared energy and accountability that comes from training alongside others.

How It Differs From Group Classes and Personal Training

It helps to understand where small group training sits relative to the two more familiar options:

           Group fitness classes:

Everyone in the room typically does the same workout, at the same pace, with limited individual correction. Great for general movement, but not tailored to your specific needs.

           One-on-one personal training:

Fully individualized, with a coach's undivided attention — but usually the highest cost option, and without the built-in camaraderie of training alongside others.

           Small group training:

Individualized programming and real-time coaching, delivered in a small-group setting. You get tailored guidance without training in isolation.

What a Small Group Session Actually Looks Like

A common misconception is that "small group" means everyone does the exact same workout. In a well-run small group program, that's not the case. Each participant's programming reflects their own goals, movement patterns, and experience level. Over the course of a session, a coach working with a small group will typically provide:

           Individualized programming for each participant

           Real-time coaching and technique correction

           Movement modifications when needed

Progressions as strength and ability increase

Ongoing tracking of progress and accountability

How the Small Group Format Supports Fitness Goals

Consistency is one of the strongest predictors of long-term progress in fitness, more so than any single workout or program design. Motivation naturally fluctuates, but accountability helps people keep showing up even on the days motivation is low.

Training with a small, consistent group creates a level of social accountability that's difficult to replicate training on your own. At the same time, because the group stays small, the coach can still track each person's progress closely and adjust their programming as needed, something that becomes harder to do well once a class grows beyond a handful of people.

The Role of Coaching in Movement Quality

One of the most overlooked benefits of a coached format, whether small group or one-on-one - is the emphasis on how you move, not just how hard you work. Technique correction and appropriate progressions reduce the risk of injury and help build movement patterns that carry over into everyday life and activity, whether that's hiking, skiing, cycling, golf, pickleball, or simply moving comfortably day to day.

Who Benefits From Small Group Training?

Small group training tends to be a good fit for people who:

Want more individualized attention than a large group class offers

           Value accountability and consistent coaching

Are working around an injury or physical limitation

Want to build strength safely and efficiently

           Appreciate measurable, tracked progress

Enjoy the motivation that comes from training alongside others

Are looking to work out with a friend or spouse

Are preparing for a specific event or goal: a wedding, a backpacking trip, ski season, or another personal milestone

It's not the right fit for everyone. Some people do better with the full individual attention of one-on-one training, and others prefer the lower-cost, larger-group energy of a traditional class. Understanding your own goals, budget, and preferences is the best starting point for figuring out which format suits you.

The best way to figure out which training format fits your goals, schedule, and experience level is to talk it through with a coach. At Fortitude Fitness Training, that conversation happens during a complimentary No Sweat Intro, where we learn about your goals, training history, and any movement considerations before recommending a program - whether that's small group training, one-on-one coaching, or our group classes.
